Newport Harbor utilizes the social model recovery concept for the client in the residential rehab program. The social model of alcohol and drug treatment in California has evolved through several generations to what we know as today's model.
Social model recovery programs emphasize the process of learning new life skills through "doing" and "experiencing" and providing positive role models. Social model programs are cost effective and outcome effective because of their ability to build strong and lasting social support systems. In other words at NHR we show clients how to live their way into right thinking rather than think their way into right living.
The roots of the modern social model are in the mutual self-help concepts of Alcoholics Anonymous. Historically, individuals struggling with early sobriety often were temporarily homeless and in need of social support systems. Members of Alcoholics Anonymous would often house newer members and act as guides by sharing their own experience, strenght and hope. With this effective and highly successful concept in mind, Newport Harbor Recovery was started and then formalized with program standards through facility licensing and certification.
Newport Harbor Recovery is structured as an excellent example of the social recovery model as a community-based, peer-group oriented, residential rehab that provides food, shelter, and recovery services in a supportive, compassionate and understanding environment. Residential treatment services provided include individual recovery plans, chemical dependency education, relapse prevention education, process and support groups and recreational activities with assistance in obtaining health, social, vocational and other community services.
